Ontario Traffic Ticket FAQs
Traffic tickets in Ontario can feel overwhelming — the fines are frustrating, the demerit points can add up quickly, and the insurance hikes can last for years. In some cases, repeat or serious offences may even lead to licence suspensions or employment issues if driving is part of your job.
At Cordaie Paralegal Services, we’ve helped thousands of drivers across Ontario successfully challenge tickets, reduce penalties, and protect their licenses and records. Whether you’ve been charged with speeding, careless driving, or another offence under the Highway Traffic Act, you don’t have to face it alone.
This page answers the most common questions drivers ask before calling us — so you can understand your options, protect your rights, and make an informed decision.
Remember: The sooner you act, the stronger your defence can be. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
“Whether it’s your first ticket or a serious charge like careless or stunt driving, knowing your rights can save you money, points, and even your licence.”

Yes. Even a minor conviction can cause your insurance company to raise your premiums for 3 years or more. Serious offences (careless driving, stunt driving, etc.) can cause drastic increases or even cancellation of your policy.
Most convictions remain on your driving record for 3 years from the conviction date. However, insurance companies often look back 6 years or more when assessing risk, meaning a ticket can affect your premiums longer than it stays on your MTO record.
In most cases, no. When you hire a licensed paralegal, they attend court on your behalf. You usually won’t need to appear unless it’s a serious charge (e.g., careless driving, driving while suspended).
For full G drivers, your licence is suspended automatically at 15 demerit points. For novice drivers (G1/G2/M1/M2), a suspension can occur with as few as 9 points.
If you don’t respond within 15 days, you may be found guilty automatically. This can lead to fines, licence suspensions, collections, and major insurance consequences.
Yes — even “small” tickets can add demerit points and trigger insurance increases that cost you thousands over time. A paralegal can often reduce or eliminate these penalties.
No. Once you pay, you are automatically pleading guilty, and the conviction goes on your record. If you want to fight it, you must request a trial before paying.
In Ontario, you usually have 15 days from the offence date to choose how to respond (trial, early resolution, or guilty plea). Missing the deadline can result in an automatic conviction.
