Ontario Demerit Points Chart & Legal Defences

Protect Your Licence • Avoid Suspension • Keep Your Record Clean

Why Demerit Points Matter

In Ontario, demerit points stay on your driving record for two years from the offence date. Too many points can mean warnings, interviews with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), or even suspension of your licence.

  • G1/G2 novice drivers face even tougher rules — just 6 points can trigger a suspension.
  • Fully licensed drivers (G) can face a suspension at 15 points.

Every ticket matters. Even a single offence can drive up your insurance premiums and put your licence at risk.

FAQs About Demerit Points in Ontario

  • 1. Do demerit points affect my insurance?

Yes. While insurance companies don’t directly see your “points,” they see the convictions. More convictions = higher premiums.

  • 2. Do demerit points ever go away?

Points stay on your record for two years from the date of offence. After that, they drop off automatically.

  • 3. Can demerit points be reduced or avoided?

Yes. With a strong defence, we may be able to reduce your charge to an offence with fewer (or no) points, or even have it withdrawn.
