Frequently Asked Questions
1. What’s the difference between sole and joint uncontested divorce?
A sole uncontested divorce is when one spouse files alone and the other doesn’t contest.
A joint uncontested divorce involves both spouses filing together and agreeing on all terms—faster, less stressful, and more cost-effective.
2. Do I need to be separated for one year before filing?
Yes. In Ontario, you typically must be separated for at least one year before filing for divorce. Exceptions for adultery or cruelty are rare and handled individually.
3. Are you authorized to handle family law matters?
Yes. Our team includes two of only 51 FLSP-authorized licensed paralegals in Ontario.
That certification, granted by the Law Society, allows us to help with joint and uncontested divorces, child support changes and enforcement, and domestic contract registration and legal name changes—where most paralegals cannot.
4. What services can you provide as FLSPs?
We handle the full range of family law filings, including:
- Sole or joint uncontested divorce applications
- Domestic contract registration (separation, cohabitation, marriage agreements)
- Child support modifications and enforcement via FRO
- Legal name change applications
5. How rare are FLSP-authorized paralegals in Ontario?
Extremely rare. Out of over 10,000 licensed paralegals in Ontario, only 51 are FLSP-certified—and two are at our firm.

6. Are your services virtual or in-person?
Most services are available virtually, anywhere in Ontario.
We do offer in-person appointments by request at our satellite offices located conveniently across the province (subject to staff availability).
7. What is a domestic contract?
A domestic contract includes separation agreements, marriage contracts (prenups), and cohabitation agreements. These documents outline property, support, and other terms.
8. Why should I register my domestic contract?
Registration grants your contract the same enforceability as a court order, making it easier to enforce through the court system or the Family Responsibility Office.
9. When can I request a child support modification?
You may apply if there’s a significant change in circumstances—like income, custody arrangements, child-related expenses, or your partner’s ability to pay.
10. Do I always need to go to court to modify child support?
Not always. Changes can sometimes be made through a Motion to Change, or managed via the Family Responsibility Office (FRO), depending on your circumstances.
11. What is child support enforcement?
Child support enforcement ensures payments are received. In Ontario, the FRO may garnish wages, suspend driver’s licenses, or garnish federal benefits. We help guide you through each step.
12. Can you help me with a legal name change?
Yes. We handle legal name change applications for both adults and minors, ensuring all paperwork is correct and submitted to the Ontario Registrar General.
13. How much does your family law service cost?
We use flat-fee pricing, meaning you’ll know exactly what it costs before we begin—no hourly surprises. Reach out for a free case review and personalized quote.
14. How long does a joint divorce take?

15. How long does a sole uncontested divorce take?
Generally 3–5 months, depending on court backlog and your circumstances.
16. How long does it take to register a domestic contract?
Usually 2–3 weeks, if documentation is complete and correctly prepared.
17. Why choose Cordaie Paralegal Services?te and correctly prepared.
